WHAT IS CELPIP TEST

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a general English language proficiency test.It is primarily used for immigration, citizenship, and academic purposes in Canada. It is recognized by the Canadian government for immigration applications, including for Express Entry and Permanent Residence. CELPIP is also accepted by universities and professional organizations in Canada for academic and job-related purposes.

The test clearly, accurately, and precisely assesses a test taker’s English abilities in a variety of everyday situations, such as communicating with co-workers and superiors in the workplace, interacting with friends, understanding newscasts, and interpreting and responding to written materials

The tests are an accurate, efficient, and secure way for career-focused training programs, institutions, and professional organizations to measure the readiness of future or current professionals to work in an English-medium environment. The CELPIP Tests can help you gauge the English language abilities of your applicants, students, or members to communicate with co-workers, understand directions from superiors, and interpret and respond to written materials.

KEY DETAILS ABOUT THE CELPIP EXAM

Types of CELPIP Tests

There are two versions of the CELPIP exam:

  1. CELPIP-General:
    • Used for immigration and citizenship purposes (e.g., for Canadian Express Entry, permanent residency applications).
    • Accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
    • Used by professional organizations and some universities in Canada for certification purposes.
  2. CELPIP-General LS:
    • Focuses only on the Listening and Speaking sections.
    • Primarily used for Canadian citizenship purposes.
    • It is shorter than the full CELPIP-General test.

CELPIP TEST FORMAT

The CELPIP-General test assesses your proficiency in English through four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The CELPIP-General LS test, on the other hand, only includes the Listening and Speaking sections.

CELPIP TEST SCORING

The CELPIP test is scored on a scale from 1 to 12 for each section, with each score corresponding to different levels of proficiency.

  • Listening and Reading: Scores range from 1 (lowest) to 12 (highest). These scores assess your comprehension abilities in different types of situations.
  • Writing and Speaking: Scores for these sections also range from 1 to 12 and are assessed based on fluency, coherence, and grammar.

Score Interpretation:

  • 1–4: Beginner proficiency (can understand basic expressions and communicate in simple terms).
  • 5–6: Intermediate proficiency (can understand common situations but may struggle with complex language).
  • 7–8: Advanced proficiency (can handle most academic or professional conversations with confidence).
  • 9–12: Proficient (highly capable of understanding and using English in complex, academic, or professional settings).

Overall Score:

The overall CELPIP score is the average of your individual section scores, and you will receive a score for each section separately.
